2019 Esports Awards & Fantastic Speech

There were many surprises during the Esports Awards ceremony, read on to discover more!

Since esports began several decades ago, many people have wanted to establish a celebration of the industry and its talent. Since 2016, the “Esports Awards” have made it their ambition to provide such a ceremony and to reward those who make the industry work, from players and journalists to content creators and sponsors. This year’s award ceremony took place in the United States at the Esports Stadium in Arlington with a substantial roster of industry talent in attendance (and looking sharper than ever).

The many awards given answered the questions about who was the best of 2019, and if any of the previous years’ award winners would continue to shine, or if they would give way to even brighter stars. After two hours and hundreds of thousands of votes from fans and a star-studded panel including the likes of Eefje’ Sjokz’ Depoortere, Richard Lewis, Duncan ‘Thorin’ Shields, and Christopher ‘Montecristo’ Mykles, we finally arrived at our list of winners.

Some of the highlights of the evening: League of Legends is the Esports Game of the Year, and its publisher Riot Games received the title of Esports Publisher of the Year. The PC Player of the Year award went to Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, placing ahead of Luka “Perkz” Perković and Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev. And it was Dr. Disrespect’s year to take home the Streamer of the Year award.

However, perhaps the most memorable figure of the evening was Richard Lewis, the Esports Journalist of the Year. Just before receiving his award, he delivered a short but intense speech about the dismal state esports news coverage by the mainstream press. He cited several instances of what can only be described as a disgrace to journalism itself, referencing some of the half-truths and outright lies that get printed about the industry and those within it. Unsurprisingly, many of those most affected by the attacks from various media outlets, such as Dr. Disrespect, could be seen standing while giving their ovation.
